Japan Van Life Ch 33 – The Surpricey Hotel

Surprising my British wife with a luxury hotel stay in Gifu, Japan. After a few tough months getting used to living in a van full-time after converting a campervan in Japan, I decided to surprise my wife with a stay in a traditional Japanese hotel (ryokan) in the famous Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture. She had NO idea I was going to surprise her, so this is her genuine reaction!

🏨 About the ryokan:
We stayed at Gero Onsen Yamagataya, a traditional onsen hotel in central Japan, which has been in business since the Edo period. The ryokan offers a traditional Japanese breakfast and kaiseki ryori (traditional in-room set dinner) made with local ingredients, private onsen, and both western and traditional Japanese-style hotel rooms (和室, “washitsu”) with river views. We stayed in a Japanese-style room with tatami and futons and were given a choice of yukata (Japanese robes) to wear during our stay.

♨️ About Gero Onsen (下呂温泉):
Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture is ranked as one of the most famous onsen (hot spring) towns in Japan along with Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma and Beppu Onsen in Oita Prefecture.

The waters of Gero Onsen are often referred to as 美人の湯 (bijin-no-yu) or “onsen of beautiful ladies” due to their incredible smoothness and alkalinity that in turn make the skin of anyone who enters silky smooth! The hot springs in Gero are particularly popular among women because of their skin beautifying properties.

There are three public bath houses, one open-air rotenburo bath, and dozens of ryokan (traditional Japanese hotels) with private onsens that can be rented out at certain times of the day by day trippers. No matter which bath house you visit, you will no doubt have a view of the beautiful river and Gero Bridge that run throw the onsen town, too.

Gero Onsen is not only famous for its hot springs, but also for its sake (酒), Hida beef (飛騨牛), its keichan (けいちゃん) chicken marinated and served with cabbage, and also its steamed custard pudding (プリン).

If you visit Gero, you can also sample one of Japan’s weirdest ice cream flavours; onsen tamago ice cream (ice cream with an egg which has been cooked in hot spring water)! Of course we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try it for ourselves 🙈

With so many ryokans and delicious local delicacies it’s easy to see why Gero is one of Japan’s most popular “must visit” onsen destinations!
