In the winter time, the Macaque monkeys in the Nagano area come down and bath in the hot springs (onsens) when it’s cold to keep warm. I’ve wanted to see these monkeys for myself for a long time and finally made the trip out here while on a ski trip in nearby Nozawa Onsen. It’s not the easiest location to get to and requires a 30 minute hike from the parking lot to the park. However, it’s totally worth it to go and check out at least once, but make sure to bundle up warmly!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you’re driving and navigating to Jigokudani Monkey Park using Google Maps, it will take you to a private road closed to visitors. There are signs along the way that are easy to miss. To avoid that trouble, you should navigate to this parking lot:

Gear:
* GoPro Hero 8
* Sony a6400
* Tamron f/2.8 17-70
* Rode Wireless Go 2
* DJI Mini 2
