💫 About Your Name. (君の名は。):
Your Name. (君の名は。, Kimi no na wa) is a multimillion dollar hit anime movie by producer Makoto Shinkai that took the world by storm in 2016. It is one of the most popular anime movies in history alongside the likes of Demon Slayer and Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.
The movie is centered around the lives of two teenagers, Taki and Mitsuha, who lead polar opposite lives – one in the smoke of downtown Shinjuku, Tokyo, the other in the sticks of rural Itomori, a fictional town in Hida with a tiny population, strong ties to Japanese tradition, and where the only café available is in the form of a vending machine (it is Japan, after all!) – but switch bodies and lives in their sleep. Think of it like a Japanese Freaky Friday.
The two must learn to lead each other’s lives without raising suspicions among family, friends, and coworkers, and keep diaries to remember where each other left off before they swap back again.
When the two eventually try to meet in person, things get complicated as viewers learn of a skewed timeline of events and a catastrophic comet, and it is down to the two high schoolers to save the town of Itomori so they can unite at last.
The movie shows stunningly accurate animated reproductions of iconic locations throughout Tokyo and the beautiful sleepy countryside of Hida in Gifu Prefecture, where Mitsuha’s fictional hometown of Itomori is based. Due to its true-to-life scenes, avid anime fans can revel in reliving the anime by visiting the movie locations for the ultimate anime pilgrimage.
We visited some of the scenes shown in Your Name. when Taki and his friends go in search of Mitsuha in Hida-Furukawa, Gifu Prefecture. A full list of the locations and their anime reproductions can be found above 👆. Even if you’re not an anime fan, Gifu is absolutely stunning in autumn and it is one of the best places in Japan to experience autumn leaf viewing and a traditional Japanese lifestyle and we recommend adding it to your Japan travel bucket list!
