This nostalgic town based in the mountainside of Obanazawa in Yamagata Prefecture. Known for it’s beautiful aesthetic reminiscent of the famous Ghibli movie “Spirited Away”, it also saw popularity due to a Japanese tv drama series in the early 80s.
After a couple hours drive from Yamagata City, the approach to the town is heralded by the river that runs through the middle of the beautiful vista. Old ryokans line each side of the river with minimal rooms available, making room reservations highly sought after, often months in advance!
