The area around Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture is a massive caldera with an active volcano, yet it’s home to thousands of people. Not only does it offer breathtaking scenery and plenty of exciting adventure travel opportunities but also uncommon cultural experiences such as the terrific farmers’ lunch that our guide Max Wall included us in. Then, right next door in Miyazaki Prefecture is Takachiho, famous for its enormous volcanic basalt column lined gorge and waterfalls. It’s also the historical setting of some of Japan’s most important mythology and so-called power-spots. This video was made while my adventure travel buddy Mark Brazil and I conducted evaluations on activities and accommodations in advance of the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS 2021) in Hokkaido in October 2021. With so much more remaining to see and do in Aso and Takachiho, we need to go there again soon!
