The lush green Meiji Shrine is located in a vast expanse of land between Shinjuku and Shibuya.
The approach to the shrine is lined with trees.
Walking along the approach with its sacred air, you will forget that you are in the heart of the city.
Meiji Jingu Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who led the era of Japanese modernization from the late 19th century.
The shrine was built in 1920, but the main shrine and other major buildings were destroyed by fire during World War II.
The main shrine was rebuilt in 1958, and Meiji Jingu celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020, the year of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
