50 – Strong, A pod of 50 + Humpback whales off the coast of Mouille Point, Cape Town. The pod of 50 plus whales are regular visitors to the Atlantic Seaboard region in December each year. Locals have seen two pods of varying sizes in the last month on 2021 and this time the pods were united into a super pod.
On the Day:
On 4 Dec at 9am, the Dolphin Inn Guesthouse owner, Paul Griffiths alerted me to the pod of feeding Humpbacks just off the coast line of Mouille Point..
I grabbed my Camera and a 200mm lens and shot off a few land-based 4k clips…. Realizing their distance was about 1km off shore I figured that the drone would be a better option as risky as it may have been flying offshore so low and with only 27mins of battery and over a kilometre to get to the pod, I knew I would have to be quick and precise to get descent footage.
After filming the spectacle for about 13 minutes I heard the menacing warning of low battery on the drone…
The super pod of Humpbacks were still feeding but I had to return to shore or lose the drone.
None the less most of the great footage was already captured and the pod was moving further offshore… The South Easter wind line came in and the possibility of shooting more was no longer an option.
What I had seen on my screen during the filming of the feeding frenzy was enough.
