The E131 series DC EMU was introduced into service by JR East’s Chiba Branch to operate local trains on the Uchibo, Sotobo Lines between Kisarazu and Ama-Kamogawa and Narita-Kashima Lines. These two car trains replace 209 series units. The trains are manufactured by J-Trec and design is based on the E235 series.
E131s will also replace 205-500 series trains operating on the Chigasaki Line (JR East Yokohama Branch from late 2021-4 car version) and Nikko Line and northern end of the Utsunomiya Line (Tohoku Main Line) (JR East Omiya Branch, from 2022-3 car version)
