Lake Kussharo is a natural lake located in Teshikaga Town in eastern Hokkaido (Eastern Hokkaido). It is the largest caldera lake in Japan and has the largest area in Japan as a freshwater lake that freezes completely. In 1934 (Showa 9), the entire area was designated as Akan National Park. According to the Ainu legend, the hero Otastunku, or Okikurumi, captured a giant Amemasu and tied it to a mountain on the shore of the lake, but the rampaging Amemasu pulled out the mountain and became the underlay of the mountain. That mountain is now Nakajima. Amemasu is still unable to die and sometimes rampages. Therefore, it is said that there are still many earthquakes in the Eastern Hokkaido region. In the 50’s of the Showa era (around 1975 to 1985), large shadows were seen swimming and ripples on the surface of the lake were witnessed in quick succession, and rumors that huge unknown creatures lived in this lake were taken up on TV. It was named Kussie after Nessie. However, it is unlikely that large aquatic organisms will exist in this highly acidic lake.

Lake Akan is a lake located in Kushiro City, eastern Hokkaido. The entire area is included in Akan Mashu National Park, and it is a tourist destination that represents Eastern Hokkaido. It is the fifth largest freshwater lake in Hokkaido. Marimo, a special natural monument, and Kokanee, a sockeye salmon residual type (land-sealed type), inhabit. In winter, the entire surface freezes, winter sports such as smelt fishing, skating, and snowmobiles are popular, and events such as the Lake Akan Ice Festival and winter fireworks are also held. The surrounding area is covered with subalpine coniferous forests such as spruce and fir, and deep forests of mixed coniferous forests with broad-leaved trees. In November 2005, it became a Ramsar Convention-registered wetland. Ainu, who saw the appearance of Mt. Meakan, where vegetation did not grow due to the influence of volcanic activity, raised smoke from the crater, and said, “I was caught in a conflict between mountains and pierced by a spear, and pus was shed from the wound.” He has interpreted and created various legends. The following is an example. Mt. Oakan and Mt. Meakan were a couple’s mountains, but Mt. Oakan surrounded Ponneupuri (a small mountain) in the back of Rubeshibe as her concubine. Knowing this, Ninekamui, the demon god, said, “It’s cheeky to have a concubine in the mountains,” said Oakan, let alone Meakan, who is innocent. The crater of Meakan is said to be the scar.
Mt. Oputateshike and Mt. Meakan in the Daisetsu mountain range were Meotoyama. However, after a quarrel, Meakan returned to her parents’ house. When she asks for an opportunity to relieve her resentment, Meakan finally throws a spear at a distant Oputateshike. When Mt. Nupukaushi of Tokachi saw it, he was surprised and tried to stop it, and one of his ears was shaved. Knowing the turmoil, Oputateshike threw his spear back and hit Meakan, so Meakan still sheds pus from his wounds. In addition, it is Lake Shikaribetsu that water has accumulated in the place of Nupukaushi who stood up to stop the spear.

Lake Mashu is a lake located in Teshikaga-cho, Kawakami-gun, Hokkaido. It is the most transparent lake in Japan after Lake Baikal in the world. In 2001, it was selected as a Hokkaido heritage site. Due to its rapid deepening and its transparency, there is little reflection of light other than blue, and the color of the lake surface on a sunny day is called “Mashu Blue”. Volcanic activity around Lake Mashu began about 30,000 years ago. Before the loss of the summit, it was a stratovolcano like Mt. Fuji, and the altitude is thought to be about 2,000 meters. The andesitic lava flow at that time formed the outer ring. The caldera corresponding to Lake Mashu was formed by a large eruption about 7,000 years ago. As a giant caldera eruption, it is about the same time as the Kikai caldera off the south coast of Kyushu, and is the newest in Japan. After that, an eruption began about 4000 years ago in the eastern part of the caldera, and Kamui Puri volcano grew. Around the same time, a lava dome was formed in the center of the caldera (the bottom of the lake) and Kamuishu Island was formed, which became the current topography.
