Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖, Kussharoko) is a beautiful caldera lake in Akan Mashu National Park. With a circumference of 57 kilometers, it is the park’s largest lake. Various outdoor activities, such as fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling, can be enjoyed around the lake.

A further attraction is several outdoor hot spring baths (rotenburo) which are located along the lake’s shores and can be used for free and, unlike most other hot spring baths in Japan, in swimsuits. Note, however, that some of these baths do not look very clean.

Sunayu (砂湯) is a touring attraction along Hokkaido Road 52 on the east side of Lake Kussharo (屈斜路湖), and is named because hot springs ooze out from the sandy beach on the lakeside. It means “A place that sand gushes out” in the Ainu language, too, so the hot springs have oozed out since a very long time ago. In Akan Mashu National Park, Sunayu Campsite (砂湯キャンプ場), Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip (砂湯レストハウス レタラチップ), Koike Shoten souvenir shop (小池商店), a public restroom and a parking lot on the site. The Sunayu Resthouse Letarachip has a restaurant and souvenir shop, and a swan boat can be rented, too. In addition, they accept a motorboat tour. Fresh green, camping, playing in the water, fishing and canoeing can be enjoyed in the summer, fall foliage can be enjoyed in the autumn, and winter scenery and whooper swans can be enjoyed in the winter. Admission free.
