4K Japan scenic drive from Kusatsu to Shibu-Toge mountain pass (altitude 2172m) and back to Kusatsu through route 292 in Sep 2020.
Route:
The road runs through Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane san, a highly active volcano, and is frequently closed due to the volcanic activity. You will find the road runs between volcanic craters if you see it on Google maps.
As of Sep 2020, bikes, pedestrians and convertibles are not allowed to pass between 2.5km around the most active volcanic crater. Evacuation shelters are prepared in the event of a sudden eruption in that area.
On the other hand, thanks to the volcano, Kusatsu town near Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane enjoys plenty of hot springs and become one of the best hot spring towns in Japan.
This road is closed in winter and a part of this road is converted into a 4.3km ski course.
Kusatsu has many tourists all year around.
