Sakurajima is a volcano located in Kagoshima Bay (Kinko Bay) in Kagoshima Prefecture, in the southern part of Kyushu, Japan, about 12 km east-west, about 10 km north-south, about 55 km in circumference, and about 77 km2 in area.It used to be an island, but due to the eruption of 1914 (Taisho 3), it was connected to the Osumi Peninsula on the opposite bank of Kagoshima City.

Sakurajima volcano is located near the southern edge of the Aira caldera, and was born about 3,000 years after the huge eruption of this caldera 29,000 years ago.It is a relatively new volcano among Japanese volcanoes.Sakurajima volcano has been repeated frequently since recorded history.There are many records of eruptions, and it is still active.The mountain that rises in the sea stands out in particular, and is considered to be one of the symbols of Kagoshima and is also known as a tourist destination.In 2007, it was selected as one of the 100 Geological Selections in Japan.It was one of the Decade Volcanoes for Disaster Prevention designated by the International Association of Volcanology and Internal Chemistry.
