What is takoyaki?
Takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼) or “octopus balls” are a type of Japanese street food that originated in Osaka. They’re little round batter balls that are slightly crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside, stuffed with octopus nuggets, tempura bits, and green onions. They’re usually served in small wooden boats, brushed with takoyaki sauce, drizzled with Japanese kewpie mayo, and topped with bonito flakes and seaweed. To pick them up, they come with skewers or chopsticks. They’re extremely popular and are probably one of the most well-known Japanese foods. People are almost always standing around the stands fanning their mouths because the takoyaki is too hot.
What is takoyaki made of?
Takoyaki balls are made from a batter of wheat flour and dashi stock, similar to okonomiyaki, and cooked in a custom cast-iron pan that gives them their signature shape.
What does takoyaki taste like?
Takoyaki are delectable! They’re extremely savory and umami-rich. They are served piping hot, so use caution when eating them. The outsides are slightly crispy, and the inside batter is seasoned, soft, and gooey, melting in your mouth. The octopus nugget inside is supposed to contrast with the softness of the batter. Green onions add a touch of freshness, beni shoga (pickled ginger) adds a sweet and sour note, and crispy tempura bits add even more richness. The sauce and mayonnaise on top add a new layer of flavor. Takoyaki is incredibly umami-rich. The perfect bite!
If there were a mascot for Japan’s best takoyaki, it would probably be beer. “Beer is the best to partner with Takoyaki”.
