八幡平（はちまんたい）は、岩手県と秋田県にまたがる台地状火山で「日本百名山」の一つに数えられます。八幡平一帯は地形がなだらかで沼や湿原が多く、標高1,614 mの山頂付近にも「八幡沼」「メガネ沼」など複数の沼が点在し、駐車場から散策道を歩いて1時間ほどで一周できます。八幡平はアスピーテ型火山（台地状火山）で、山あいのいたるところに火山性の湯泉が湧き、火山観察のための自然研究路も設けられています。
八幡平には全長約27kmの「八幡平アスピーテライン」が開通し、山麓から山頂付近まで絶景のドライブも楽しめます。「アスピーテライン」の随所から雄大な岩手山を望めます。岩手山の標高は2,038ｍ、岩手県最高峰の山で「日本百名山」の一つに数えられます。
岩手県側の標高1,000ｍの高原地帯は「御在所」と呼ばれ、温泉やスキー場など、レジャーの拠点となっています。八幡平ロッジの裏から遊歩道を下っていくと、御在所湿原や御在所沼・赤沼・休憩東屋があります。
大沼は八幡平の秋田県側の中腹にある沼で、一帯は「森林浴の森百選」に選定されています。周辺には後生掛温泉や玉川温泉などの温泉地が点在し、森林浴と温泉浴が楽しめる大自然の宝庫です。「森林セラピー基地」としても認定されており、大沼を中心に森林セラピーロードも整備されています。大沼の周囲を一周できる自然探勝路もあり、森の中も通りながら30分ほどで歩いて一周できます。
玉川温泉は、八幡平の秋田県側山麓にある温泉で、「大噴」と呼ばれる湧出口から強酸性泉が湧出し、豊富な湯量と効能から、湯治場として人気があります。玉川温泉には地熱の高い地獄地帯が存在し、人々がゴザを引いて岩盤浴を行う光景が見られます。
玉川温泉は人気が高く、宿の予約も困難だったため、「新玉川温泉」など別館や新設館が拡張されてきました。玉川温泉から大沼・後生掛温泉へ至る登山道もあり、八幡平の大自然と火山の恵みを満喫できます。
宝仙湖（ほうせんこ）は、玉川ダムの建設によって形成された人造湖で、水没地域が「宝仙平」と呼ばれていたことが名称の由来です。
玉川ダムは一級河川・雄物川水系の玉川に建設されたダムで、「ダム湖百選」にも選定されています。
ダムの上流には、玉川酸性水中和処理施設が設置され、玉川温泉の源泉から湧き出る強酸性水を中和しており、宝仙湖は中和施設から流出した石灰水を撹拌させていて、そのため宝仙湖は青白い湖水を湛えています。
活火山・八幡平は地球のエネルギーを体感できるエリアで、温泉や森林浴を通じて、自然の恵みを満喫できます！

Hachimantai is a plateau-like volcano that straddles Iwate and Akita prefectures, and is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. The Hachimantai area has a gentle topography with many swamps and marshes, and even near the 1,614-meter-high summit, there are several swamps such as Hachiman-numa and Megane-numa, and it takes about an hour to walk around the area from the parking lot.
The 27-km-long Hachimantai Aspite Line is now open in Hachimantai, and you can enjoy a spectacular drive from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain.
From many places along the line, you can see the magnificent Mt.Iwate, the highest mountain in Iwate Prefecture. Mt.Iwate is 2,038 meters above sea level and is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan.
The 1,000-meter high plateau area on the Iwate side is called “Gozaisho,” and is a base for leisure activities such as hot springs and ski resorts. If you go down the boardwalk from the back of Hachimantai Lodge, you will find Gozaisho Marsh, Gozaisho-numa, Akanuma, and a resting pavilion.
Onuma is a swamp located in the middle of the Akita Prefecture side of Hachimantai, and the whole area has been selected as one of the “100 best forests for forest bathing”. The area has been selected as one of the “100 best forests for forest bathing.” The surrounding area is dotted with hot springs such as Goshougake Onsen and Tamagawa Onsen, making it a treasure trove of nature where you can enjoy both forest bathing and hot spring bathing. The area is also certified as a “forest therapy base”, and a forest therapy road has been established around the Onuma. There is also a nature trail that circles around the Onuma, and you can walk around it in about 30 minutes, passing through the forest.
Tamagawa Onsen is a hot spring located at the foot of the Hachimantai mountains on the Akita Prefecture side. In Tamagawa Onsen, there is a hell zone with high geothermal heat, and people can be seen pulling up gosa to take a rock bath.
Hachimantai, an active volcano, is an area where you can experience the energy of the earth, and enjoy the blessings of nature through hot springs and forest bathing!
