My five-and-a-half minute film of the Swiss resort of Engelberg (canton of Obwalden) shows very clearly the attraction of the Central Alpine region of this glorious country: the streets are very quiet in Summer, with little traffic and a large amount of open green space all around the town. The buildings are modern and everything is neat and tidy. There is not much more to see in Engelberg, apart from the Benedectine monastery which admits visitors. But what chiefly makes this 1013m (3323 feet) high mountain resort so attractive to tourists is the presence all around of accessible and dramatic alpine summits. Without doubt the most exciting among these is the peak of Mt Titlis, (3238m / 10,623 feet). In Engelberg starts the unique revolving gondola cable car, carrying passengers quickly and comfortably to the top. There the main attractions are the Titlis Cliff Walk Suspension Bridge (good head for heights required – it’s the highest suspension bridge in Europe) and the Glacial Park at Klein Titlis, where you can go right inside a glacier.
