Senganen is the site of the villa of Shimazu, the lord of the Satsuma domain, and its garden in Azaiso, Yoshino-cho, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Also known as Isotei Garden. The site area is about 5ha.Country-designated scenic spot.
It was landscaped by Mitsuhisa Shimazu, who was the 19th head of the family in 1658 (the first year of Manji), and has been rebuilt by successive heads since then. It was designated as a national scenic spot in 1958 (Showa 33), featuring a magnificent view and a vast garden that resembles Sakurajima as an artificial hill and Kagoshima Bay as a pond using the technique of borrowing scenery.
At the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, the 28th head of the family, Shimazu Nariakira, started a modernization project (shuseikan project) such as building a European-style steelworks and glass factory using a part of this site. In 1857 (4th year of Ansei), a gas pipe was connected to a stone lantern in the park to ignite it and used as a light, so it is also one of the roots of the origin of gas lamps in Japan.
From 1888 (Meiji 21), it was the residence of the Duke Shimazu family instead of Kagoshima Castle, which was burnt down, but Tadashige Shimazu, who succeeded after Tadayoshi’s death, moved to Tokyo by new government officials from the Satsuma domain. After being relocated, Sengan-en was also absent. In 1949 (Showa 24), it was placed under the control of Kagoshima City due to the abolition of the Kazoku system, but in 1957 (Showa 32) it was returned to the Shimadzu family and is now managed by Shimadzu Limited.
It is famous for the Spring Winding Stream Party, the Tango no Sekku, which is held according to the Edo period, the Tanabata exhibition, and the deer ceremony held in early winter.
