Welcome to Sugamo – a shopping district at the top end of the Yamanote Line that is popular with the old folk. It’s the Shibuya for the 50+ crowd! In fact Sugamo is so well catered to the elderly that AED defibrillators are accessible on the street.
The streets of Sugamo are flat, with textured bricks to prevent slipping. Most shops are barrier-free with ramp access for customers in wheelchairs or with walking sticks. The shopkeepers are very friendly, and some are not shy to tap your shoulder in the hopes of striking a conversation with you.
