Back in August of 2019, we visited Japan. We went on our own and visited the main cities: (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) as well as a couple of countryside places and some day trips.
Since our flight arrived and departed from Tokyo and it’s a huge city, we decided to split the visit into two areas: At the beginning of the trip we stayed ad Shinjuku and visited Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku and Asakusa and at the end, we stayed at Ueno and visited Ikebukuro, Odaiba and a bit more of Shibuya.
In the beginning, during our first stay in Tokyo, we booked a guided excursion to Mount Fuji and Hakone. After Tokyo, we took a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Takayama (in the Gifu region, the Japan Alps).
The next stop was Kyoto, including a half-day trip to Nara. After Kyoto, we went to Mount Koyasan to experience the life of the Shingon Buddhists.
After that, we visited Osaka and the Himeji castle during a morning trip.
After Osaka, the idea was to visit Hiroshima on our way to Miyajima, but we could not visit Miyajima due to the upcoming approach of Typhoon, so we had to return back to Tokyo one day before planned after visiting the Hiroshima museum.
