Freshwater beaches and holiday resorts. To the northeast, 4,000-meter Mount Ibuki can be climbed for far-reaching views over the lake Biwa.
Nara is in south-central Honshu, next to Osaka. The city has significant temples and artwork dating back to 8th century, when it was Japan’s capital. Near by is the Shinto shrine Kasuga Taisha, which dates to 768 A.D. and more than 3,000 lanterns is the must to see.
Mie within the Kansai region, has vast protected areas and some 1,000 kilometers of Pacific coastline. The park encompasses the Shima Peninsula, including Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks), a pair of sacred sea rocks linked by ceremonial rope.
Comfortable day trip from Hiroshima. Great photos can be taken here.
Wakayama is also in the Kansai region. Its namesake capital is home to Wakayama Castle set in a hilltop park with city views.
