San Juan Mountains are rhe most southern mountain range of Colorado. A bottle neck for every thru-hiker on the CDT. If you enter it too early there is still too much snow left. If you wait too long you might get in a hurry to reach Canada before the coming winter.
I really just hit the right time. Quite a bit of snow left, yes, and loads of melting water. But easy doable. To experience one of the first well known Colorado thunderstorms teached me my Colorado hiking schedule.
