武士のお屋敷、武家屋敷跡の面影が残る、名古屋市の白壁・主税・橦木町地区を散策してきました。
名古屋城の東側に位置するこの地域は、江戸時代に中級武士の居住地となっており、多くの武家屋敷が立地していました。
明治時代以降、武家屋敷跡の広大な敷地は輸出向けの陶磁器産業の中心地として発展していきます。
大正時代以降は名古屋を代表する財界人などが多く移り住み、質の高い和風住宅や近代洋風建築などが建てられました。
日本を代表する自動車メーカー、トヨタ自動車の前身である豊田自動織機の創業者、豊田佐吉の弟である豊田佐助の屋敷も現存し公開されています。（今回は事情により撮影できませんでした）
また、豊田佐吉の婿養子である豊田利三郎の邸宅は現存しないものの、立派な門と塀が当時の雰囲気を醸し出しています。
また、日本の女優第1号と言われる川上貞奴が暮らした邸宅を移築復元した「文化のみち二葉館」や、陶磁器商として活躍した井元為三郎の大正末期から昭和初期に建てた邸宅である「文化のみち橦木館」、ピアノの生演奏が楽しめるホールを備えた「文化のみち百花百草」など、多くのレトロな洋館も見どころです。
この地域は現在も閑静な高級住宅地となっており、歴史を感じられる建物の一部は高級料亭や創作フレンチが味わえるレストラン、結婚式場としても利用されています。
歴史と同時にグルメも楽しめる白壁・主税・橦木町地区、ぜひ一度訪れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

I walked around Nagoya’s Shirakabe, Chikara and Shuboku districts, where samurai residences still remain.
Located on the east side of Nagoya Castle, many samurai residences were built in this area during the Edo period.
From the Meiji era onward, the ceramic industry for export developed in this area.
From the Taisho era onward, many of Nagoya’s leading businessmen and women moved to the area and built high quality Japanese-style houses and modern Western-style buildings.
The mansion of Sasuke Toyoda, the younger brother of Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation It still remains and is open to the public.
You can also visit many retro Western-style buildings built after the Taisho era.
The “Bunka-no-michi Futaba-kan” is a reconstructed mansion where Sadayakko Kawakami, Japan’s first actress, lived.
The “Bunka no Michi Shumoku-kan” was built from the end of the Taisho era to the beginning of the Showa era by Tamesaburo Imoto, an active ceramics merchant.
The samurai residences are now used as high-class Japanese-style restaurants, creative French restaurants, and wedding venues.
In this area, you can enjoy visiting samurai residences and gourmet food.
