00:00- INTRO* Today let’s explore the famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto.

00:17- Along the way to the temple there are many shops where you can buy traditional Japanese souvenirs.

00:24- The red gate is the Nio-mon Gate to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The warriors guarding the gate are called Nio. This temple is also known as the “Pure Water Temple” deriving its name after the waterfall site that the temple sits by.

01:00- Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which is a Buddhist Temple was built in the year of 778, the Heian period to honor Kannon – the Goddess of Mercy. The gate you see here was added in the 15th century. The temple is officially known as the Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera was founded by a monk at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara. This is in fact the most visited temple in Kyoto. The temple is located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama mountain range, about halfway up Mt. Otowa. The majority of the buildings that you will see here were burned down multiple times but then later restored in the year of 1633. Today the Kiyomizu-dera Temple is on the UNESCO or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization list for the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

02:02- The red structure is the Nishi-mon or the West Gate to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Behind the Nishi-mon Gate is the Kiyomizu-dera Temple’s Triple Pagoda (清水寺 三重塔). Triple because this pagoda has 3 stories.

02:35- As you walk up the stairs, on your left you will see the Entsu-den Hall with a big bell hanging inside.

03:15- The view here is spectacular and breathtaking with the mountain hills and the city in the distance.

06:08- The Tamura-dō.

06:22- On the right is the Todoroki Gate for the Buddhist Kiyomizu-dera Temple leading to the main hall. The Chozubachi or the water bowl standing right in front of the Todoroki Gate is used for rinsing hands prior to entering the temple is known as the Azusa no Chozubachi. That’s because it is engraved with the Kannon Bodhisattva and the owl on the Chozubachi.

11:15- Heading away from the temple there are so many different shops and restaurants along the way. You can find authentic Japanese samurai swords, kimonos, geta, zori, and many souvenirs as well as the Japanese snacks.
