和歌山城は、和歌山県和歌山市にある徳川御三家の一つ紀州藩紀州徳川家の居城。
元和五年(1619年)に、浅野氏の広島への転封に伴って徳川家康の十男頼宣が五十五万五千石でこの地に入城し、徳川御三家の紀州徳川家が成立しました。
その後、この紀州徳川家より八代将軍吉宗、十四代将軍家茂を輩出することとなります。
和歌山城の天守閣は、連立式天守と呼ばれ、大小の天守をはじめ、天守二の門(楠門)、二の門櫓、乾櫓、台所と多門櫓が連結した珍しい構造。
連立式天守は、ここ和歌山城の他には姫路城と松山城が現存しています。
明治維新後も国宝となった天守など主な建築物は現存していましたが、昭和20年の米国の和歌山大空襲によりほぼ焼失してしまいます。戦後になり、連立天守群などが再建されました。

Wakayama Castle is located in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, and is the residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family of the Kishu domain, one of the three Tokugawa families.
In 1619, Yorinobu Tokugawa’s the tenth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, entered the castle with 555,000 goku in place of Asano clan, and the Kishu Tokugawa family of the Tokugawa Gosanke was established.
After that, the 8th Shogun Yoshimune and the 14th Shogun Iemochi will be produced from the Kishu Tokugawa family.
The castle tower of Wakayama Castle is a rare structure called the “Renritsu-shiki Tenshukaku”, which consists of a large and a small castle tower, a second gate of the castle tower (Kusunokimon), a second gate Oar, an Inui Oar, a kitchen and a Tamon Oar.
In addition to Wakayama Castle, Himeji Castle and Matsuyama Castle are the only other two surviving towers of this type.
After the Meiji Restoration, the main buildings, including the castle tower, which became a national treasure, still existed, but they were almost completely destroyed by fire in the U.S. air raid on Wakayama in 1945. After the war, the castle towers and other structures were rebuilt.
