Back when Spring first started, we wanted to go somewhere peaceful to enjoy the nice weather, but also make our trip a bit more educational. So, we looked up a few places and discovered Shimoda City!
Shimoda (下田) is a super chill and peaceful coastal city in the south of the Izu Peninsula. It has deep historical importance as the landing place of several of Commodore Matthew Perry’s “black ships” in 1854, an event which marked the end of Japan’s era of isolation and the start of diplomatic relations between the US and Japan.
We spent 3 days 2 nights here, and enjoyed ourselves very much: there was beautiful scenery, fantastic coastal views, and an unusual aquarium situated in Wakanoura Bay! What an experience!
