Japanese shrine

Tomioka Hachiman Shrine

The shrine was founded in 1627 by Nagamori Hoin, a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, on a small island called Eitaijima at that time. At that time, the shrine was called “Eitaijima Hachimangu,” and had a land area of 60,508 tsubos due to the reclamation of a sandbar.

It was also protected by the Tokugawa Shoguns, who revered Hachiman-daishin, and was popular among the common people as “Hachiman-sama of Fukagawa” [1]. The spacious and beautiful garden was a popular attraction.

Nagamori also built Eitaiji Temple as a separate temple on the same site.

Around the shrine, the Monzenmachi (present-day Monzen-Nakacho) was formed, and as the reclaimed land extended offshore, it became an important commercial area.
