温泉好きなら一度は耳にしたことがある『日本三名泉』の発祥の地、下呂温泉の「無料」で入れる足湯巡りです！
『日本三名泉』とは
室町時代の京都五山相国寺の僧・万里集九(ばんりしゅうく)が延徳元年(1489年)、延徳3年(1491年)、下呂温泉に滞在中に書いた詩文集『梅花無尽蔵』に
「本邦六十余州、毎州有霊湯、其最者下野之草津、津陽之有馬、飛州之湯島三処也」
意訳「日本の60諸国の霊湯の中で最たるものは草津温泉、有馬温泉、下呂温泉です」
と記し、家康から4代にわたって徳川幕府に仕えた儒学者・林羅山が『摂州有馬温湯記』の中で
「我國諸州多有温泉其最著者摂津之有間下野之草津飛騨之湯嶋是三處也」
と追認した事が根拠となり『日本三名泉』と呼ばれるようになりました
下呂温泉が日本三名泉の発祥の地と呼ばれているのは、万里集九が下呂温泉で湯治中に記した書物が初出だからです

What is “Japan’s Three Famous Hot Springs”?
Banrishuuku, a priest of Shokokuji Temple in Kyoto during the Muromachi period, wrote that “the best of the 60 sacred hot springs in Japan are Kusatsu Onsen, Arima Onsen, and Gero Onsen.”
Hayashi Razan, who served the Tokugawa Shogunate, also wrote that “the best hot springs in Japan are Kusatsu Onsen, Arima Onsen, and Gero Onsen.”
Based on these facts, Arima Onsen, Kusatsu Onsen, and Gero Onsen have come to be called “Japan’s Three Famous Hot Springs”.
Gero Onsen is called the birthplace of the three famous hot springs in Japan because Banri syuuku wrote a book at Gero Onsen.
