Takachiho Gorge is a gorge over the Gokase River in Mitai, Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument (Gokasegawa Gorge (Takachiho Gorge)).Manai Waterfall, Tamatare Waterfall, Araragi Waterfall, etc. are famous.

Due to the volcanic activity that created the Aso caldera due to the large eruption, the high-temperature pumice flow (a type of pyroclastic flow) that erupted twice, about 120,000 years ago and about 90,000 years ago, flows thickly along the Gokase River canyon at that time.It went down. This pyroclastic flow deposit was cooled and consolidated into welded tuff, and columnar joints were formed.Since welded tuff is susceptible to erosion, the Takachiho Gorge is the V-shaped canyon that was once again eroded by the Gokase River. The cliffs that reach a height of 80 to 100 m continue for 7 km, and these are collectively called the Gokase River Gorge (Takachiho Gorge).

It was designated as a natural monument on November 20, 1934 (“Gokasegawa Gorge (Takachiho Gorge)”).On March 25, 1965, it was designated as Sobo-Katamuki National Monument.
