Our journey across northern Japan continues with our second day in Hokkaido! First on today’s agenda, we visit a beautiful canal town named Otaru as a day trip from Hokkaido. While the city was beautiful with tons of snow coming in, what was really surprising was the lack of tourists there. It really felt quite special to have this beautiful place almost to ourselves.
Back in Sapporo, we decided to check out a few more of the city’s sights on our last day there. First up was the Sapporo Beer Museum which features tons of information on one of Japan’s most famous beer brands. We also got to sample different types of Sapporo Beer, some of which are only available in the museum! Afterwards we went for some typical Hokkaido Ramen at JR Tower’s Ramen Republic. Miso Ramen is the specialty in Sapporo and with a little bit of spice added to it, this was the perfect dish to warm up on a cold winter day.
Also in the JR Tower, we visited the observation deck on the 38th floor which provides beautiful and unobstructed views across Sapporo and the surrounding areas. Here you could really beautifully see the chessboard layout of Sapporo as the city is fairly new and has been built in the styles of New York and other places similar.
As the last stop of the day, we checked out a restaurant serving one of Sapporo’s most famous dishes: Genghis Khan. This mutton dish is similar to Yakiniku where meat is grilled on a small charcoal grill right at the table. Unfortunately there was a small mistake that made the experience a bit less fun…
