When you arrive in Israel, you will see the sites of events which powerfully affect the world to this day. The greatest of these is one which much of the world calls “Easter”, referring to the Sunday Jesus Christ is resurrected after being crucified that previous Good Friday in the year 30 Anno Domini, which literally means “In the year of our Lord”. So where did the word ‘Easter’ come from then? It was originally penned by an 8th century Benedictine monk named Bede who says it was the name of a German myth Ēostre, where people celebrate the vernal equinox in the month which we now call April. Rabbits and Easter eggs are also a Germanic tradition. However, Easter is actually a term used for the Jewish Passover known as “pascha” פָּסחָא in the Aramaic language in which Jews and Christians remember the exodus of Jewish slaves from Egypt. You may notice that unlike Christmas, the Easter date changes each year. This is due to divisions in the church, and in 325 a.d., the first council of Nicea meets in Turkey to decide that will be Easter will be commemorated the Sunday after the firstfull moon of the Spring Equinox. This places the Christian holiday between March 22nd and April 25th. Now, you can observe this springtime moveable feast as you travel throughout the world, because ‘Easter’ has an even more powerful significance behind the word.
