A Weekend in Hakone Pt. 1 | INCREDIBLE Views of Mt. Fuji & Lake Ashi | Japan Cheap Food & Travel

Hakone is one of the most scenic places in Japan. It is also one of the most accessible, at only 2 hours away from Tokyo, so it makes for a perfect weekend getaway of beautiful sights, relaxing onsens and delicious food. Find out in this video how to do it all on a budget with public transport and cheap local food.

The cheapest way of getting to Hakone is using the Odakyu Railway. If you want to see everything Hakone has to offer, then their Hakone Free Passes are a great deal. You get a round-trip to Hakone and unlimited use of all public transport in Hakone over 2-3 days. You can buy this at Shinjuku Station and hop one of Odakyu’s express trains to Hakone-Yumoto town in 2 hours (transit in Odawara). From Hakone-Yumoto you can start the popular Hakone sightseeing loop in either direction, with the highlights being an up close view of Owakudani crater and riding a pirate ship (!) across the vast Lake Ashi.

If budget allows, then I would also highly recommend staying at a ryokan within the Hakone area and experience kaiseki ryori, a fancy & traditional Japanese banquet. Also if you have extra time, Odawara has more to offer than a transit city and makes for a fun half-day side trip. You can check out both of these ideas in my Hakone playlist!
