Izumi Crane Toraichi is located in the paddy field of Izumi Plain in northwestern Kagoshima Prefecture, and is known for the wintering of about 10,000 cranes from mid-October to March the following year.245.3ha in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture is designated as a national special natural monument as “Cranes in Kagoshima Prefecture and their destinations”.
Every year from mid-October to mid-November, vines arrive on the north or northwest wind. In addition to about 10,000 hooded cranes and about 3,000 white-naped cranes, common cranes, demoiselle cranes, sandhill cranes, and siberian cranes also come to Japan. Overwinter while eating the second ear of rice that grows in paddy fields and fallow fields after harvesting, weeds of the sedge family, setogaya, matsubai, eleocharis kuroguwai, potatoes, frogs, snails, snails, and butterflies. Artificial feeding is also carried out, and about 75 tons of wheat, paddy, brown rice, soybeans, etc. are given annually. In addition, a wetland filled with shallow water is prepared as a roost so that it will not be attacked by raccoon dogs and weasels, and it is well protected. On the other hand, the surrounding farmers must put up protective nets in the fields to prevent the crops from being damaged. Just before the vine returns to the north, about 8 tons of sardines are given. On a clear day from early February to late March, it rises in a circle on the updraft generated by the west or northwesterly wind and flies north.
The breeding grounds for cranes that fly to the Izumi Plain are the wetlands of Lake Baikal to the middle reaches of the Amur River, and the white-naped cranes from the middle reaches of the Amur River to the upper reaches. In addition to the Izumi Plain, there are the Yashiro Basin in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Daegu in South Korea, the wetlands of Goryeong-gun and the military border, and the Changjiang River basin in China. Since there are many vines, the number of vines that come to Izumi Plain fluctuates.
