Hot sand bathing in Beppu on Kyushu Island Japan. Everything you need to know about hot sand bathing, where to go, what to do and how much it costs to have a hot sand bath. Most importantly what does it feel like?
We got buried in sand in Beppu (Oita prefecture) but you can also try hot sand bathing in Ibusuki down south of Kyushu in Kagoshima prefecture. It’s crazy fun, very relaxing, and a unique Japanese experience.
The heated sand will warm your whole body, and its weight also aids in improving blood circulation. It has been said that the benefits of a hot sand bath are 3 to 4 times greater than that of a regular Japanese hot spring bath.
It’s a lot of fun (unless you get an itchy nose!) and nothing could be simpler. Just lie in the sand wearing a yukata (like a thin cotton kimono) and the assistant will cover you in hot sand. Time’s up after about 15 minutes and then off to shower feeling warm and energised.
