おくのほそ道の風景地大垣船町川湊は、標高約5～6m前後の岐阜県大垣市中心部の船町に位置し、揖斐川（いびがわ）の支流水門川（すいもんがわ）両岸に川湊の趣の残る風景地です
船町川湊は、大垣藩により慶長年間に大垣城下船町に設置されて以降、西濃地域の人・物資・文化の交流拠点として人々の生活を支えてきました
松尾芭蕉は、古歌にまつわる歌枕の名所及び由緒・来歴の地などを訪ね東北・北陸路を旅した『おくのほそ道』において、元禄2年（1689）8月21日に大垣に来訪し、大垣の俳人たちと交流を重ねました
そして9月6日、船町川湊から舟で伊勢の二見へと旅立つ際、大垣の俳人たちと別れる名残惜しさを
「蛤（はまぐり）のふたみにわかれ行秋（ゆくあき）ぞ」
と詠み、『おくのほそ道』の結びとしました
現在、船町川湊の水門川の川縁は静かな水面にソメイヨシノの並木が生える桜の名所となっています
その東岸には岐阜県史跡「住吉燈台（すみよしとうだい）」が建ち、「船町公園」が整備されています
また、大垣の人々が芭蕉を顕彰してきた歴史を示す顕彰碑や句碑が、水門川沿いの両岸に多く設置されています
すでに川湊としての機能は失われていますが、『おくのほそ道』の時代の雰囲気を今に継承し、往時のよすがを偲ぶ鑑賞上の価値が高い地としてきわめて重要です
指定地に隣接する「奥の細道むすびの地記念館」では、芭蕉や『おくのほそ道』、地域の先賢に関する資料を展示しています
Located in Funamachi in the center of Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, Ogaki Funamachi Kawaminato is a scenic spot on both banks of the Suimon River, which is a tributary of the Ibi River.
The edge of the Suimon River in Funamachi is a famous place for cherry blossoms with rows of Yoshino cherry trees on a quiet surface.
Gifu Prefecture historic site “Sumiyoshi Lighthouse” is built on the east bank, and “Funamachi Park” is maintained.
Although the function as Kawaminato has already been lost, it is extremely important as a place with high appreciation value in memory of the good times of the past, inheriting the atmosphere of the “Okunohosomichi” era.
At the “Oku no Hosomichi Musubi no Chi Memorial Hall” adjacent to the designated area, Basho, “Okunohosomichi”, and materials related to local wise men are exhibited.
