This monument’s cross, as well as the memorial stone, is dedicated to 33 Christian Martyrs who were tortured by having the boiling onsen spring water poured over their bodes in an effort to have them renounce their faith. However, they endured as their flesh was slowly boiled off their bodies. This occurred in the Unzen Jigoku (雲仙地獄 – “Unzen Hell”) area between 1627 and 1631.

The monument stands on the hill overlooking Unzen Jigoku, and commemorates the faithfulness of the martyrs still today.
