@Visit Japan: The Oki Islands, located on the Sea of Japan off the coast of Shimane Prefecture…

The Oki Islands, located on the Sea of Japan off the coast of Shimane Prefecture in western Japan, is home to some of Japan’s mot scenic, stunning coastline. Off the coast of the largest island Dogo, you will find Rosoku-jima, a narrow spire of volcanic rock rising 65 feet out of the sea. Rosoku-jima translates as Candle Island, in reference to the fact that when the setting sun is perfectly aligned with the stack’s peak, it looks like a burning candle. Sightseeing boats bring visitors to the right vantage point for seeing the sun resting on the rock. The area is part of Daisen-Oki National Park and is recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
