In this on going cooking series, we try and make dishes inspired by the trips we have taken around the world. In this video we make our favourite Japanese dish, okinomiyaki !!! Okinomiyaki is a cabbage pancake, but it’s waaaaay better than it sounds! The name literally means “what you like, fried”. Okinomiyaki can be made with any sort of topping or ingredient you like, hence it’s name Japanese pizza. We like to top ours with green onion, bean sprouts, mayo and okinomiyaki sauce! We also add smoked salmon sometimes! You can add meat if you are a meat eater!!
There are two main styles of okinomiyaki in Japan, Osaka Style and Hiroshima Style. Osaka style is simpler, mixed like a pancake and we make that in this video. Hiroshima style has many many layers, and adds noodles!! You can go to a place in Hiroshima called okimonimuira which is a multi level okinomiyaki super centre, each floor filled with different okinomiyaki shops that specialize in different styles and types of okinomiyaki!
