They keys to safe driving in the snow are: 1) Do NOT drive in the blizzard, 2) Do NOT drive when your front view is limited by heavy snowfall, 3) Start slowing down far in advance when you are coming to stop – at least two times, if possible, three times of distance of when you normally start slowing down, 3) make a turn only after you make a complete stop then turn – very important! I love driving in the fresh snow that is less dangerous than driving in on the icy roads.
This route, from Niseko-cho taking Route 5 to Hirafu, is longer in distance than coming from Kutchan to Hirafu, but actually it takes less time since you will be taking the Route 5 that is not congested from Niseko-cho than coming from Kutchan on Route 5 or on 343 (try to avoid driving 343 from Kutchan to Yamada – it is very dangerous during winter even for locals).
