With over 300 kilometers of canals, Yanagawa is referred to as the Venice of Japan. Tourists are punted down the canals by boatmen who break out into songs as the gondolas glide through neighborhoods. For this episode we’ll walk through the town of Yanagawa and catch the start of the annual Ohina-sama Water Parade (Princess Water Parade.) Weather permitting – there is a threat of rain. During the Ohina-sama Water Parade, young girls dressed in kimono ride down canals in boats decorated with hina dolls. About 200 brightly dressed girls and their mothers glide along downtown Yanagawa’s canals, which are also decked out with sagemon (ornaments), in nearly a dozen riverboats. Participation is open to any mother and daughter who apply in advance. The boats float at a leisurely pace, making the parade a popular destination for shutterbugs looking to snap some pictures from the banks. This will be fun!

FAQ
Who are you?
Nick Szasz, a Canadian who has lived in Japan for about 35 years. Thirty-one years in Fukuoka, three in Tokyo and one in Osaka. I’m the founder and publisher of Fukuoka Now magazine, a monthly printed bilingual magazine about Fukuoka and Kyushu for international residents and visitors from overseas. Fukuoka Now magazine: and Fukuoka Now website
Why are you doing this?
I love Kyushu, walking, and cameras, so this seemed like a perfect combination and fun, and I feel Fukuoka and Kyushu are still underrepresented. I hope that even in this small way, I can show off and connect Kyushu to the world. So please sit back, relax, and let me do the walking and talking!
Support Welcome!
Between January 1, 2021 and March 21 I’ve posted 32 episodes, and I’d like to continue to post even more, maybe twice a week? But it takes time, so f you can afford to support this project you can pledge a monthly amount on our Patreon or pledge using YouTube’s “superchat” feature – we just turned it on – I hope someone will try it soon.

Kyushu Liveでの計画は?
まだまだ手探り状態だけど、福岡市内を撮ったら九州一円に広げていきたいと思っている。PATREON(ファンがクリエイターを直接支援できるサービス)でも登録しているので応援してね!
