The Austin Capital MetroRail system uses diesel-electric trains and runs from downtown Austin north to Leander. It runs on a very limited schedule only during the morning and evening commuting hours. There is no service on Sunday. The trains are nice, comfortable, and very air conditioned! One surprising thing to me is that the the crossing arms for grade crossings seemed to come down quite late. in one instance, the arm wasn’t even fully down before the train passed. This is very different from most other places in the world, where the crossing arms may go down 1.5 – 2 minutes before the train arrives.
