世界でも珍しい絶景を見る事ができる蔵王の樹氷は、山形県山形市の蔵王温泉スキー場の地蔵山山頂付近で発生する自然現象で、東北地方を南北に横断する奥羽山脈の中でも一部の亜高山地帯でしか確認されておらず、海外でも樹氷についてのはっきりとした報告がされていない例が多くあります。
蔵王の樹氷が生成されるには山形県特有の地形と気候が関係しているとされております。朝日連峰で雪を降らせた雪雲が山形盆地を通過中に0度以下でも凍らない過冷却水滴となり、蔵王連峰を雪雲が上昇中に水滴と雪が混じり合った状態で10~15m/sで吹く北西の季節風と平均気温がマイナス10℃～マイナス15℃の吹雪の中で幻想的な樹氷を作り上げます。
山形蔵王温泉スキー場では、夜に蔵王の樹氷ライトアップも行われ、昼間とは違う幻想的な夜景を楽しむ事ができます。蔵王の樹氷は別名アイスモンスターとも呼ばれていて、まるでモンスターのような姿をしている事が由来となっているそうです。
今季はなかなか天候に恵まれず、ライトアップを3回見に行ってやっと見る事ができました。
風が強く吹く日が多く、2月の中旬頃には崩れてしまった樹氷が多かったとの事で、昼の部は来年また見に行きたいですね。
