Shirakawa-go is one place many people who would like to come to Japan have on their wish list and yes, it has been on mine for a few years. Nestled in the Gifu alps, this fairy tale village is a must-see for any photographer, as it is just beautiful. With its picturesque houses called “Gassho-zukuri” shaped like prayer hands.

So why did I not go earlier? I always felt it was a bit too far out of the way. However, I know better now and it is actually the perfect trip easily accessible from Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto. Although I do feel having an extra day or two just makes the trip to the area more memorable. So join me on a small tour of the area as I explore this tiny mountain village.
