Time to check out the number one top ramen shop in Aomori called Hirakoya and a favorite of locals called Menya Koshin. Both are just off Tsugaru-Shinjō Station and can be easily combined for a great ramen trip.
Tsugaru-Shinjō Station is just one stop from the Shinkansen station Shin-Aomori or two stops from the central Aomori Station. Besides these two ramen shops, there isn’t really anything to do there, so make sure those two are actually open when you go.
Hirakoya is not only well known by locals, but has a reputation beyond the borders of Aomori prefecture. It won awards and recommendations from almost all reputable award sources in Japan. The result is that you will most likely have to wait a bit once you get there. Interestingly, especially in summer, the shop allows you to wait in your car instead of in front of the shop, which makes sense considering how freezingly cold it can get in Aomori. Once inside, you quickly realize that everything here is about niboshi and thick chashu.
Koshin on the other hand is more of a hidden secret of the locals. Koshin is serving a thick and gritty tori paitan with some niboshi notes in the background. Combined with thick noodles which are made inhouse, this hot and steaming bowl of ramen is a real treat for cold winter days.
