The Manda Mine of the Miike Coal Mine (万田抗)
Straddling the city of Arao and the neighbouring city of Omuta in Fukuoka Prefecture, the Miike coal mine flourished. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the two shafts were built with the best of Meiji-era technology, equipment and machinery, and coal mining reached its peak in the early 1900s, supporting Japan’s industrial development.
