Makishi Public Market, located in Naha City, started as a gathering place for local merchants dealing with contraband goods right after the end of WWII. Since its official inception in 1950, it has been serving local residents with necessary provisions from fresh produce to fish and meat.

Visiting the market is one of the best and fun ways to learn about Okinawa’s food culture. It is also a great place to get lost, talk to the locals, and learn about Okinawan ways of life. Here, Mr. Goeku from the restaurant “Taste of Okinawa” guides us to the Market and shows us ingredients essential for Okinawan cooking.
