One of Kyoto’s most memorable sights is Shinto shrine, Fushimi Inari.

Located at the base of Mount Inari, the shrine is dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, sake, and prosperity.

Fushimi Inari is home to thousands of torii, or “shrine gates”. To express their gratitude, visitors donate a torii gate whenever their wish comes true, a tradition which has continued for centuries.

As a result, the shrine has accumulated over 10,000 torii. On the back of every torii gate you will see the name of the donator and the date they made their contribution.
