【Kumamoto Prefectural Decorated Tumulus Museum】
(熊本県立装飾古墳館)

The museum specialises in decorated ancient tombs.

The museum is the work of the architect Tadao Ando. It is built in the shape of an anterior and posterior round burial mound and is point-symmetrical with the Iwahara Futatsuzuka burial mound, one of the largest anterior and posterior round burial mounds in Kumamoto Prefecture, located on the Iwahara burial mound site.

The museum displays a faithful reproduction of the interior of the decorated tumulus, which is not usually seen. The museum also displays artifacts from the Preceramic period (Old Stone Age) to the Middle Ages.
Outside, there is a ‘Haniwa Park’, a walking path between the tumuli, and on the plateau wall, the Iwahara Yokanagari Tomb Group.

It is also a hands-on museum where visitors can enjoy lectures and events, such as making magatama (clay tablets) and other ancient experiences, as well as mobile experiences where curators visit the museum.
