Miyajima or Itsukushima is a must-see place when in Hiroshima. It is know for its iconic orange Great Torii Gate that will free you as you come close to the island. This gate marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was fist built in the 12th century.

Getting there from Hiroshima station is simple. Just tried the local train to Miyajimaguchi station. From there, transfer to the ferry for a 10 minute ride to the island. Both local train & ferry are ran by JR so having a JR Pass is an advantage.

Where to Stay

There are a lot of available accommodations in the island but I highly recommend you stay in a ryokan. In our visits, we stayed at Hotel Sakuraya (〒739-0588 Hiroshima, Hatsukaichi, Miyajimacho, 853−1) which is a 5 minute walk from the pier.

Where to Go & Things to Do

Itsukushima Shrine & its iconic Torri Gate is Miyajima’s most popular attraction. It is a 10 minute walk from the Ferry terminal. Travelers are allowed to enter the shrine during the day and during low tide, you can walk all the way to the torrid gate and be awed by its size.

NOTE : as of this posting, the tori gate is undergoing some renovation works.

Daisho-in Temple is Buddhist temple located at the foot of Mt Minsen. It is home to Buddha statues wearing knitted hats.

Miyajima Public Aquarium is home to several sea life found around Miyajima. It is a 15 minute walk from the town center.

Hike Up Mt Minsen, it is the highest mountain in Miyajima. You can reach the summit by hiking or by riding the ropeway. If you prefer a morning hike then we recommend the 3 km trail via Daisho-in temple. The hike may have some steep ascents but the sceneries are truly rewarding.

Take a walk around the town, visit the pagodas and buy souvenirs at the Omotesando Shopping Street.

Where to Eat

There are quite a number of restaurants found in the island though out of them close early. Make sure you try the oysters which Miyajima is famous for.

Hope this helps! Have a safe & enjoyable visit to Miyajima! Feel free to leave a comment and please subscribe to my channel for more places to be discovered. Thanks!
