<Approach the great Torii gate of the shrine by ship!>
This early morning tour, which departs from close to Miyajima-guchi JR Station, ferries you the short distance to the oyster rafts that lie off the coast of Miyajima. After watching the morning oyster harvest, you can get an unrivalled close-up view of Itsukushima Shrine’s great floating shrine gate (currently undergoing renovations) and the chance to stand on top of one of the oyster rafts. Look out for sunameri finless porpoises on your way back to port where your tour ends with a traditional fisherman’s breakfast of warming rice porridge (with fresh oysters, of course) and barbecuing your own oysters on the shell. All in all, well worth getting up early for.
