【4K】Japan Temple | 護国寺 | Gokokuji Temple near Ikebukuro Tokyo | 大本山　護国寺

東京メトロ有楽町線「護国寺駅」からすぐの所にある護国寺です。池袋駅から徒歩でも１５分ほどで辿り着くアクセスの良さにも関わらず朝は人もまばらで静けさが心安らぐ、美しいお寺です。

Gokokuji is located just off “Gokokuji Station” on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. It is a beautiful temple where people are sparse and quiet in the morning, despite the good access that can be reached within a 15-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station.

■護国寺について
当寺の創建は天和元年2月（1681）、五代将軍徳川綱吉公が、その生母、桂昌院の発願により、上野国（群馬県）碓氷八幡宮の別当、大聖護国寺の亮賢僧正を招き開山とし、幕府所属の高田薬園の地を賜い、堂宇を建立し、桂昌院念持仏の天然琥珀如意輪観世音菩薩像を本尊とし、号を神齢山悉地院護国寺と称し、寺領三百石を賜ったことに始まる。翌2年、堂宇は完成した。
　明治16年、大正15年と火災で堂宇の多くを失ったが、観音堂（本堂）は元禄以来の姿を変えず、また、近江三井寺より移築された月光殿（重文）は桃山期の建築美を今に伝えている。その他、薬師堂、大師堂、多宝塔、忠霊堂や創建当時のものと伝えられる仁王門、惣門。そして中門と多くの堂宇が保存、または再建されている。また、元禄文化の粋を集めた書画・什器の他、国宝、重要文化財等の数多くが寺宝とされている。
　震災、戦災と二度の大災害に襲われた東京の都心にありながら、江戸の面影を今に伝える当寺の姿は、訪れる人々の心のふれあいの場として、昔も今も変りなく親しまれている。

This temple was built in February 1681. The fifth shōgun, Tunayoshi Tokugawa, invited priest Ryōken of Daishō gokokuji temple, upon the request of his mother, Keishōin. This temple became sacred to the natural amber Nyoirin-Kanzeon-Zō. The present Kannon-Dō was built within half a year after the shogunate ordered it be built in January 1697. In August of the same year, the ceremony of opening was held. The main building is a large hall which was established to exhibit a collection of arts dating back to the Genroku period and is said to be the most magnificent in Tokyo. What’s more, in spite of an earthquake and a war, it was left unchanged. Its design traces the traditional grandeur of the Edo period into present times.
