(Excerpt from my book):
… There before me was the scene that I had seen so many times before in photographs.
In those photos though there was freshly raked brown soil with two stout animals and their handlers at center stage. Around the periphery was amphitheater-style seating filled with women with children skittering around them, and men with white towels wrapped around their head and neck, smoking and drinking, and most likely secretly wagering on whose bull would emerge the victor. Off to the sides, families gathered picnic-style on tatami mats spread out on the grassy knolls. Colorful, energetic images of Okinawans at their leisure best. But that was clearly not what lay before me on this cold, blustery, and drizzly day. No roars from a native crowd. No repetitive commands from handlers in the middle, shouting at their beasts. No children playing gleefully while their elders attended …
I forgot to attribute the soundtrack on the backend of the video.
